Strategic Direction

Get an independent technology strategy and a prioritised roadmap your leadership team can actually align behind.

Leading Without a Coherent Technology Strategy?

Growth, a stalled transformation, new compliance obligations, or a shift to cloud and AI can all leave technology decisions being made ad hoc, with strategy, delivery and outcomes owned by different people who don't share the same picture.

Perhaps a major programme has lost its way and needs re-baselining around business outcomes, or leadership simply needs a coherent direction the board, the business and technology teams can align behind.

When every supplier arrives with a strategy that conveniently ends in their own product, what you need is an independent and objective perspective, to provide the strategic direction that best supports your business.

Strategic Direction gives you that independent direction.

Who This Service Is For

Strategic Direction is built for leadership teams who need organisation-wide clarity, not just a single decision answered. This typically includes:

Boards and Senior Leadership Teams Needing a coherent technology strategy and an independent direction to align behind, rather than a supplier-led agenda
Organisations at an Inflection Point Facing growth, transformation, new compliance obligations, or a shift to cloud and AI
Defence Needing SC/DV cleared, UK-resident senior input for a whole-estate strategy across Defence
Stalled Transformations Needing to re-baseline a major programme that's lost its way around business outcomes
SMEs and Scale-ups Scaling rapidly and outgrowing their in-house strategy capability
CNI and Public Sector Needing UK-resident senior input from people who understand regulated, critical environments across Critical National Infrastructure

What You Get

Strategic Direction produces a defined, consistent set of artefacts, each one built to inform real investment decisions rather than sit on a shelf. It sets out:

Discovery Findings Pack

Stakeholder interviews and a review of your current estate and in-flight work, with the business problems agreed with leadership in plain language.

Technology Strategy

A supplier-agnostic strategy aligned to your business goals, not shaped by any product or platform.

Prioritised Roadmap

A sequenced stabilise, optimise, transform plan with indicative costs and benefits.

Business Case Support And Executive Playback

Support for the investment decisions the roadmap requires, presented to your leadership team rather than handed over as a document.

Every output is yours to act on immediately, executable with or without Defended Solutions.

How It Works

Strategic Direction is delivered by a small, senior team, led by a named Engagement Lead throughout.

The engagement runs in phases across a fixed elapsed time, typically four to eight weeks depending on the size of your estate. Each phase has a clear scope and timeframe, and pricing will be fixed based on the scope of the project.

Where your scope is open-ended or likely to evolve, a time-bank option gives you the flexibility to draw on senior time as needed, rather than committing to a single fixed figure upfront. All prices exclude VAT.

1

Discovery and Analysis (Weeks 1–2)

We run senior-led stakeholder interviews and workshops, alongside a review of your current estate and any in-flight work.

2

Problem Definition (Weeks 2–3)

We articulate the business problems in plain language and agree them with your leadership, before any technology is discussed.

3

Strategy (Weeks 3–5)

We set out a technology strategy aligned to your business goals, independent of any supplier or platform.

4

Roadmap and Business Case (Weeks 5–7)

We build a prioritised, sequenced roadmap, stabilise, optimise, transform, with indicative costs and benefits, plus support for your business case.

5

Executive Playback (Weeks 7–8)

We present the strategy and roadmap to your leadership team directly, rather than handing over a document.

6

Quarterly Review (Optional, Ongoing)

Once the strategy's in place, you can opt into a quarterly review, a light cadence that keeps the strategy live as your business changes.

Not Sure Which Service Fits?

Strategic Direction is one of three ways to work with Defended Solutions' Strategic Advisory team, each suited to a different need.

FEATURE RAPID OPTIONS PAPER → STRATEGIC DIRECTION FRACTIONAL CIO/CTO/CISO →
Best For A single decision Organisation-wide technology direction Ongoing embedded leadership
Duration 10 working days 4 to 8 weeks Ongoing, minimum 3-month term
Output Options paper and playback session Technology strategy and prioritised roadmap Continuous leadership and delivery
Price Basis Fixed price Fixed price or time-bank Retainer

If you're still weighing it up, the difference usually comes down to scope. A single decision points you toward the Rapid Options Paper, a technology strategy for the whole organisation points toward Strategic Direction, and ongoing senior leadership points toward a Fractional CIO, CTO or CISO. A short conversation is often the quickest way to confirm where you sit.
